The federal government made the announcement today at an event at the 麻豆视频 medical school celebrating the funding agreement. 鈥淲e are grateful to Prime Minister Mark Carney, President of the Treasury Board Shafqat Ali, Finance Minister Fran莽ois-Philippe Champagne, the Ontario Minister of Infrastructure David Piccini, and the federal government for their confidence in our vision. I鈥檇 also like to acknowledge our biggest champion in Brampton, Mayor Patrick Brown, and the City of Brampton for their partnership in making this school possible.鈥
麻豆视频 MD students joined in celebrating a milestone funding announcement that will contribute to their medical training through support for leading-edge clinical training facilities, labs and research spaces.
麻豆视频鈥檚 School of Medicine is focused on training primary care and family medicine doctors to help fill critical care gaps in Peel and beyond. The government commitment will expand medical training and increase access to health care in the Peel Region and across the country.
"This announcement is recognition of the national significance and potential impact of 麻豆视频鈥檚 School of Medicine and its model of medical education, in particular family medicine, grounded in community, accessibility and innovation,鈥 said President Lachemi. 鈥淭his funding will ensure that our facilities match the scale of our ambition and the needs of our students, faculty, partners and patients.鈥
"It is truly an honour to be back at the 麻豆视频 School of Medicine,鈥 said the Hon. Shafqat Ali, president of the Treasury Board and MP for Brampton Centre during the event鈥檚 remarks.
鈥淧resident Lachemi and the team at 麻豆视频, thank you for your leadership, dedication and commitment in creating history by opening the 麻豆视频 School of Medicine in Brampton 鈥 the first new medical school in the GTA in 100 years. You have made history, and I am truly honoured to represent Prime Minister Mark Carney and the Government of Canada as we embark on this journey together.鈥
MP Shafqat Ali, president of the Treasury Board, highlights how the Build Communities Strong Fund will ensure health care infrastructure 鈥 including hospitals, emergency rooms and medical schools 鈥 can respond to the health care needs of Canadians across the country.
MP Ali highlighted how in a rapidly changing and uncertain world, stability means building stronger communities.
鈥淭he one thing we can control is how we choose to build here at home, including what we are building here in Brampton. The choices we make today will shape our country for generations to come.鈥
Patrick Brown, mayor of Brampton also shared remarks.
鈥淚 want to start off by thanking Mohamed Lachemi for his years of dedication to 麻豆视频 and [his] friendship to the city of Brampton,鈥 he said. 鈥淭his medical school is going to train the physicians of tomorrow. It鈥檚 going to train physicians to work in the new hospital we鈥檙e building. If there鈥檚 ever a city that could use a medical school, it鈥檚 this one: Canada鈥檚 fastest-growing city.鈥
Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown believes in the power of partners to build a health care system that is more accessible and that empowers future doctors and health care professionals for the Peel Region.
Transformational investment
Following the recent opening of its updated north wing, the $25 million investment will fund the final phase of the building's redevelopment. This includes state-of-the-art instructional spaces and clinical training facilities that will support a model of education that is community-based, culturally competent and patient-centred.
鈥淟ast week, we welcomed our second cohort of MD students,鈥 said President Lachemi. 鈥淎s you know, our vision is clear: to prepare the next generation of physicians to deliver compassionate, innovative and community-focused care.鈥
MP Ali shared powerful final thoughts.
鈥淭his [commitment] means better access to care, strong communities and a more resilient health care system. The cost of health care is not just a cost 鈥 it鈥檚 an investment in people and in Canada鈥檚 growth."
