Working at the ARCS Lab
We want the ARCS Lab to be a place where you do your best work, grow as a researcher, and enjoy the people around you. This page describes how we work together: what we ask of lab members and what you can count on from me in return. It complements, and does not replace, Â鶹ÊÓƵ policies and your program's requirements. All lab members are also expected to follow our Code of Conduct.
Expectations & Lab Culture
- Professional Commitment: Research positions in the ARCS Lab, whether funded through stipends, assistantships, or course credit, are professional roles rather than extracurricular activities. The lab invests in hardware, computing resources, funding, and mentorship. In return, lab members are expected to take ownership of their projects, make steady progress, and meet agreed-upon milestones. Research involves setbacks, and we value resilience, problem-solving, and a growth mindset as you develop into an independent researcher.
- In-Person Collaboration: Much of our work, including hardware integration, testing, and day-to-day collaboration, happens in person, in our lab space (DAL109) and shared graduate areas (AOB, 12th floor). As a general benchmark, graduate students and postdoctoral fellows are expected to be on campus at least three days per week, adjusted to project needs. For undergraduate students, in-person time is agreed on individually based on the type and scope of the position. We care about research outcomes rather than hours logged, but great research rarely happens in isolation, and a lively lab culture depends on people being here.
- Meetings: Regular, punctual attendance at weekly group meetings and 1-on-1 check-ins with the PI (Sven Lilge) is expected. If you can't attend, let us know in advance. Group meetings are a space for research updates, external speakers, and professional development workshops, and everyone is expected to participate by giving and receiving constructive feedback. For 1-on-1s, come prepared with recent progress, planned next steps, and specific roadblocks so we can make the most of our time.
- Work-Life Balance: Lab members are encouraged to take their vacation time according to Â鶹ÊÓƵ policy, observe religious holidays, and prioritize their physical and mental health. Please coordinate vacation dates with the PI and collaborators in advance. Sick days and mental health days require no justification; simply notify the PI and your project collaborators.
- Paper Authorship: Authorship reflects substantial intellectual contribution to a project. We discuss authorship and author order openly and early, typically when a paper is first planned.
Supervisor Commitments & Support
As PI, I hold myself to high standards of mentorship and aim to provide a supportive, equitable environment tailored to your goals.
- Mentorship & Career Guidance: In our 1-on-1s, we will discuss research milestones, work through technical bottlenecks, and plan your path after graduation, whether that's industry or academia. I want to see you grow as a scientist and as a person, and my commitment to your success doesn't end when you leave the lab.
- Resources & Workspaces: Depending on your project, the lab provides research hardware, computing resources, prototyping equipment (such as 3D printers), and workspace in DAL109 and AOB. Graduate students are also encouraged to join the for additional infrastructural support.
- Publishing & Conferences: We aim to publish in top-tier robotics venues, such as IEEE ICRA and IROS and leading journals (IEEE RA-L/T-RO). I actively support manuscript preparation and support travel for lab members to present their accepted papers at international conferences.
- Professional Development: I offer regular training and guidance on scientific writing, peer review ethics, implicit bias, and inclusive leadership.
- Accommodations & Concerns: If you need accommodations, or if something isn't working, please come talk to me. If you'd prefer to raise a concern with someone else, you can contact the Graduate Program Director or the Office of the Ombudsperson.
