Poverty is everyone’s problem
A community is only as strong as the sum of its parts. Too many people in the Peel, Â鶹ÊÓƵ and York regions are battling poverty, and finding it difficult to access the essential services and supports they need to succeed.
Recent findings from United Way’s Financial Anxiety Survey found that 63% of people living in Ontario feel anxious when thinking of their finances — a 6% jump from last year. That anxiety impacts every part of daily life, affecting student success, workplace focus, physical health, and overall family well-being. And the burden is even harder for people with lower incomes. While some of us may feel removed from the struggles of living below the poverty line, it’s a social and economic issue that affects everyone in the Greater Â鶹ÊÓƵ Area (GTA): when people can’t access basic resources to help them live healthy lives, we all fall behind.
Fortunately, we are in a position to empower those who need our assistance. By supporting the United Way, you can help ensure no one falls through the cracks.
United Way is meeting our community’s most urgent needs by directing funds to the agencies and services that support neighbourhoods where poverty is concentrated. But they can’t continue to do it without you.
When you make a donation to Â鶹ÊÓƵ’s United Way Campaign you’ll be an important part of helping our community rebuild and tackle poverty across the GTA.
A donation of any amount can make a difference:
- $100 can provide an unhoused person with essentials such as warm clothing, socks and blankets to survive unsheltered for a month.
- $250 can provide a family with a week’s worth of nutritious groceries or critical items such as hygiene supplies or baby formula for a family.
- $500 can cover legal consultation fees for a survivor of gender-based violence.
There are many wonderful organizations in the GTA that are committed to tackling critical social and economic challenges, but the United Way is Â鶹ÊÓƵ's longtime charity of choice. Like them, we believe that everyone deserves a fair chance at a good life – their support systems fight poverty in all its forms, and create opportunities for people from all walks of life.
The United Way network also has the size and scope to connect a range of partnerships to build stronger solutions. Just as we work to give every member of the Â鶹ÊÓƵ community the chance to thrive, we want to ensure that the people around us can build bright futures too. If we each do our part, everyone reaps the benefits of a healthy, resilient and prosperous society.
