AE8108 Aircraft Turbine Engines (Graduate)

This graduate course covers the analysis and design of aircraft gas turbine engines. It examines the working principles and major components of these engines: diffusers, compressors, combustion chambers, turbines, and nozzles. Students study the operation, design, and installation of gas turbine engines, with an emphasis on air-breathing engines for subsonic and supersonic civil and military aircraft.

The course reviews selected topics in aerodynamics and thermodynamics relevant to jet engines and introduces performance and one-dimensional parametric cycle analysis of air-breathing engines. It also discusses the environmental impact of aircraft engines and advances in fuel technologies, and covers the design of major engine components.

AE8129 Rocket Propulsion (Graduate)

This graduate course covers the analysis and design of rocket propulsion systems. It begins with a review of thermodynamics and one-dimensional compressible flow, including stagnation states, isentropic flow, choking, shock and expansion waves, and nozzle operation. Students then analyze rocket performance through the thrust equation, characteristic velocity, thrust coefficient, mixture ratio, and the principal losses in real nozzles. The course also covers staging and the Tsiolkovsky rocket equation, and discusses chemical rocket systems and their propellants.

AER710 Aerospace Propulsion (Undergraduate)

This undergraduate course introduces the analysis and design of aircraft propulsion. It covers the working principles and major components of aircraft propulsion systems: diffusers, compressors, combustion chambers, turbines, and nozzles. Students study the operation, design, and installation of gas turbine engines. The course also introduces rocket propulsion and discusses advanced propulsion concepts for space applications.

AER309 Basic Thermodynamics (Undergraduate)

Introductory concepts and definitions: thermodynamic systems and fluid properties. Energy, work, heat, and power. The first law and thermodynamic cycles. Properties of a pure, simple compressible substance: phase change and the ideal gas model. Control volume analysis: conservation of mass and energy. The second law: reversible and irreversible processes and the Carnot cycle. Entropy: the Clausius inequality, entropy change, entropy balance for closed and open systems, and isentropic processes and efficiencies. Gas power systems: air-standard Otto, Diesel, dual, and Brayton cycles.

"My principal duty as a teacher is to help my students reach their full potential."
